Darebin Nature Trust

What is a Nature Trust?

The Darebin Nature Trust is an initiative that will see a group expert in the field of environmental preservation and conservation guide the process to acquire new land to add to Darebin’s network of public open space. The goal of this trust will be the preservation of ecologically significant land as well as enhancing habitat corridors and conservation lands.

Background

The four year Council Plan includes a specific goal to create a Nature Trust for Darebin to increase open space and native vegetation, and ensure all residents live within 500 metres open space. This Nature Trust will focus on strategic land acquisition, preserving biodiversity and creating a proactive response to the changing climate that is putting stress on our ecological systems.

What are we doing?

In June 2018, Council confirmed membership of the Darebin Nature Trust. The Trust will develop initiatives to help the city adapt to the climate emergency. It will focus on strategic land acquisition and the preservation and enhancement of biodiversity and remnant bushlands to prevent the extinction of local flora and fauna.

The interim Nature Trust will be active for 12 months. At the close of this time, an expression of interest will be advertised to set a more permanent group.
