What are Council rates?

Council rates are a property tax apportioned on the valuation of each property to determine the amount that ratepayers will be charged.

Rising property prices do not increase the amount of rates collected by Council each year and is offset by a reduction to the rate in dollar used to calculate the rates for each property. Total rate income is fixed each year as part of the budget process taking into account the rate cap. Property valuations are used to distribute the rate burden across all properties in the municipality.
