Flinders Street Thornbury streetscape upgrade

Flinders Street, looking east.

What are we doing?

Council is developing a new streetscape layout for Flinders Street Thornbury from Station Street to Matisi Street and is now seeking community input for the design.

Background:

The existing road is in very poor condition or unconstructed in parts and major works are required to bring them back to new condition and improve the safety and amenity of the area.

Significant community support and advocacy by local residents and users has resulted in Councils commitment to renew Flinders Street Thornbury from Station Street to Matisi Street.

Project Objective:

The overall streetscape will be improved by formal construction works including new road surface, footpaths, kerb and channel, new underground drainage, water sensitive urban design and tree planting.

Stage 1 works will include the section from Walsh to Matisi and Stage 2 works will include the section from Station to Walsh.

How can I get involved?

You can review the preliminary layouts under the document library and tell us your comments, thoughts and ideas to help shape the final streetscape layout. This can be found in the document library on the right column of this page.

All comments and feedback will be reviewed and used to refine the final streetscape layout.

You can keep track of further updates for this project via this page.

13 August 2018 Project Update - Stage 2 Under Review

Concept Consultation has now closed & we are currently reviewing submissions.

All comments will be collated, reviewed and considered. There will be further consultation prior to adopting a final plan.

Thank you to all who took time to review the documents and provide feedback!

4 October 2018 Project Update

We have collated and reviewed responses relating to residents preferred layout of the new streetscape. The majority of the residents that responded are in support of Option 1 layout.

The feedback was mostly positive and supportive for the street to be changed and renewed.

We are still reviewing some comments with regards to the finer details of the layout and will be in touch further regarding any changes prior to adopting the final layout. An updated layout will now be prepared with our Parks team to include new trees for the available planting opportunities and there will be some further consultation regarding this later in the year.

Big thanks to all who participated so far!

7 December 2018 Project Update

We have adopted Option 1 layout and used this as a basis for the Capital Bid Submission. The Capital bid submission is required to enable us to obtain funding for construction works in 2019/20 (subject to Council approval).

We are proceeding with the detail design phase and site investigations in the meantime. There will be some further consultation regarding the new street tree planting and specie selections in the near future.
