What is being proposed?

    The upgrade will respect the original look and design but make sure its level and strong and will serve the community for years to come. 

    Works will include

    • Restumping
    • Recladding
    • New DDA compliant amenities (toilets)
    • New retaining wall between the courts and the pavilion
    • Removal of the brick toilet block (currently not used)
    • A larger club house space that can also be used as a community meeting room.

    Why was G.E. Robinson selected for a redevelopment?

    Many factors have contributed towards the realisation of the proposed works:

    • Age and condition of the Pavilion (built in 1935) the building is sagging in and need of upgrading
    • The pavilion is conveniently located and following redevelopment would be suitable for a broad range of community uses

    Is the building heritage listed?

    The park and pavilion are subject to a heritage overlay. The proposed works will be in keeping with this and the original design of the building.

    The internal refurbishment of the existing space and the external cladding design of the planned building extension will look similar to the existing building fabric.

    The new amenities (toilets) will be of a modern (yet modest) design.

    Will the building lose its traditional look/feel?

    No. The design of the refurbishment and extension will pay respect to the original look and feel of the existing Pavilion. 

    External colours are utilizing a heritage palate. Within the club room / social space, finishes will pay homage to heritage design elements.

    The new amenities (toilets) will be of a modern (yet modest) design.

    Will there be access for someone in a wheelchair?

    Yes. The refurbishment and extension will be DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) compliant.

    Will there be toilets for community to use?

    The new toilets planned as part of the building extension will be accessible only through the tennis court area. When the tennis club is open, the community are welcome to use the toilets.

    Will community have access to the social space?

    The Regent Tennis Club haven given an in principle agreement to allow community use of the space when not used for tennis. 

    Council is investigating the potential for an electronic access system that will allow for community groups and individuals to book the club room / social space (booking and cleaning fees may apply).

    This space could be used for activities such as community group meetings, fitness classes, community celebrations etc. 

    This option will be pending Regent Tennis Club negotiations and community interest.

    What are the start times for construction? Will there be a lot of noise?

    Monday to Friday (Start 7:30am / Finish 4:30pm)

    Saturday “if required” (Start 8:30am / Finish 3:30pm)

    Noisy works:

    • Demolition of existing toilet block to allow for pavilion extension
    • Removal of the existing cladding for building stabilisation works
    • Concrete pump and concrete trucks used for pouring of pad footings and retaining wall
    • Circular saws used during constructing the extension framework (roof extension will be trusses built off-site) and alterations to the existing structure

    How much of open space is the building taking (footprint)?

    The existing pavilion footprint is 64.1m².

    The extension only of the upgraded pavilion will be 88.6m²

    Total footprint of the upgraded pavilion will therefore be 152.7 m²

    The footprint of unused toilet block that will be removed is 35 m²

    Will the community have access to the courts on a casual basis?

    Council is working with the Regent Tennis Club to consider the installation of an electronic access system for the updated pavilion and the tennis courts that will allow tennis club members and the general public to book the courts and the club room / social space online (booking fees may apply).

    Will there be coaching conducted here at the GE Robinson Pavilion’s red courts (clay)?

    Discussions have begun around the idea for potential collaboration with members of the Regent Tennis Club to provide tennis training (training fees may occur) on the blue courts (hard wearing) to amateur players seeking to improve their tennis skills. 

    This training collaboration could be an initiative to amateur tennis players whom may be interested in becoming a paid member of the Regent Tennis Club and competing in their held tournaments.
