Extended Outdoor Dining in Darebin

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link

Darebin Council is working with our local hospitality businesses to actively support them in welcoming back customers into new outdoor settings. Council’s Extended Outdoor Dining Project aims to increase outdoor dining spaces in a COVID Safe, socially distanced environment.

This project has been designed to support hospitality venues safely expand outdoor dining areas into approved public spaces and operate within the health restrictions advised by the Victorian Government.

What’s happening now?

Applications to extend outdoor dining are being assessed on a case-by-case basis, taking into consideration amenity, safety and site-specific conditions such as impacts on residents, as well as the need to maintain social distancing and provide ease of access for pedestrians and essential vehicles. Council will continue to review the temporary permits as needed for safety and amenity.

Businesses wanting to apply for extended outdoor dining can find more information by visiting our website.

How will I be impacted by these temporary changes?

As part of this project, Council has worked in partnership with local businesses to install parklets - on-road car parking spaces that have been reallocated for outdoor dining use.

We want to ensure the community is aware of the parklets that are being installed within their area.

The map below contains a list of the parklets that Council has supported through the Extended Outdoor Dining Project. Click on the map to see the businesses we have worked with so far.

How can I provide feedback?

We welcome feedback on what you think about these temporary measures and other locations you think we should consider parklets and activities. This feedback will help us to ensure that the temporary measures are a good fit for their environment and to inform Council’s future planning for the municipality.

You can leave feedback by dropping a pin on the map below or by calling our Customer Service team on 8470 8888 Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.

Benjamin Street Trial Open Space

Thank you to all of our community members who provided feedback on the temporary Benjamin Street road closure. This project has been delayed until further consultation can occur in January 2021. We will update this page when the dates for this consultation are confirmed, and contact all neighbouring households and business directly.

Duncan Street Trial Open Space

In consultation with the Fairfield Traders Association and our local hospitality businesses, we are welcoming feedback on the proposal for a temporary trial open space at Duncan Street, Fairfield. The proposal includes:

We are proposing the creation of a temporary, open space by closing Duncan Street (west) at Station Street.

A proposed three month trial would include:

  1. A family friendly, temporary shared open space created by the closure of Duncan Street (west).
  2. The use of water-filled barriers to safely manage the temporary street closure.
  3. Covering of the road surface with synthetic turf plus a range of measures to beautify the space (see images on next pages).
  4. Provision of seating and rubbish facilities.
  5. An alcohol-free zone.
  6. Monitoring safety and impacts on the neighbourhood.

You can view the proposed concept plans in our document library, and are welcome to provide feedback by placing a pin on the Darebin Paklets Map below, or by contacting Claire O'Driscoll on 8470 8405 or at business@darebin.vic.gov.au by Thursday 4 February 2021.
