What's happening in Railway Place, Fairfield

Council is committed to listening to our community.

With the works and future changes occurring in Railway Place, Fairfield, we want to make sure that the community is regularly updated.

What has happened so far?

  • The Mayor, Cr. Le Cerf and Cr. Rennie met with Railway Place businesses and surrounding residents on Saturday 11 August 2018 at St Andrews Church Hall in Fairfield.
  • Feedback has been received from the drop-in session, email and feedback sheets that were distributed to properties affected by the disruption.

The following is a summary of the issues that were highlighted by the community:

  • Community and public safety
  • Safer footpaths during period of construction
  • Parking
  • Construction management plans
  • Sewer works
  • Rates and footpath permits

What has Council done since the drop in session?

  • Council has funded the installation of a zebra crossing at the Train Station on Wingrove Street. Construction is expected in March 2019. A permanent pedestrian crossing on Railway Place is under review.
  • New parking restrictions have been installed and will allow for higher turnover of parking spaces near Railway Place in Fairfield Village.
  • At the request of Council Nightingale have provided a newsletter to keep the community informed about forthcoming works in Railway Place.
  • Council officers will continue to regularly visit Railway Place and seek to find solutions with our community in mind.

Future works

  • Approximately five unexpected water bursts have occurred in Fairfield since January, which has resulted in disruption to businesses and loss of car parking.
  • From Monday 27 August 2018, Yarra Valley Water will be constructing new water pipes in Wingrove Street and Station Street in Fairfield, to upgrade the reliability of water supply to the area.
  • If you have any questions or feedback, please contact Yarra Valley Water's project manager, Phil Taverna, on 9872 2445.
  • Local traders can also provide feedback to Heidi Crundwell of the Fairfield Traders Association Inc on 0417 580 009 during business hours.

Update: Saturday 1 September 2018 – Sunday 2 September 2018 - Road closure - Jemina

  • Officers attended Railway Place on the weekend and confirmed the work that was being undertaken in Gilles Street.
  • This work was being completed by Jemena who were connecting the electricity supply on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Jemena advised that they had notified residents and businesses.
  • Officers are contacting Jemena to discuss the timing of any planned future works.
  • All buildings sites were compliant with their transport management plans.
  • Businesses in the area looked busy with patrons on both days.
  • Council officers will continue to attend the site on a regular basis.
